Our verdict on each
Bunpro
Bunpro suits self study learners who want Japanese only and want to try before they pay, with a free tier and a 30 days trial behind a $5 monthly plan. It falls short for anyone after several languages or live speaking practice, and the Japanese list leaves little room there.
FrenchPod101
FrenchPod101 suits French learners who want audio, app and live teaching inside one subscription, backed by a 60 days money-back window. The trade-off is scope and support: French covers French alone, and help runs on email and help centre, so multi-language or phone-first buyers should compare elsewhere.

Pros and cons
Bunpro
Pros
- A free tier means a learner can start at no cost, and price from is $0.
- The monthly plan sits at $5, and a one off lifetime price of $150 removes renewal maths.
- The 30 days trial is the long end of what apps in this group offer, and 7 to 30 days covers the gap after it.
Cons
- The Japanese list holds Japanese alone, so learners of Spanish or German have nothing here.
- Support runs on email, help centre and community, which is written channels only, with no live speaking line.
- A monthly plan at $5 is only worth it for a trial window; the $150 lifetime price is the cheaper long run.
FrenchPod101
Pros
- Entry plans start at $4 and the monthly option sits at $10, so a short commitment costs little to test
- The 60 days money-back period ranks 2 of 29 brands, so a wrong fit is easy to reverse
- One subscription mixes app work, audio and live teaching, with app, audio and live 1to1 all inside the plan
Cons
- Coverage sits on French, so anyone studying another language needs a different service entirely
- Help runs on email and help centre, and chat and phone are not among those routes
- The 7 days free trial ranks 8 of 21 brands, so the trial is a brief signal and the refund window does the real testing
Who each suits
Bunpro
Who it suits
- Self study learners who want Japanese and are happy with a single app
- Learners who prefer a one off payment to a rolling subscription
- People testing an app for a few weeks before committing
Who should look elsewhere
- Learners of Spanish, who get broader audio and video coverage from SpanishPod101
- Anyone wanting live conversation practice, since study here is app based
- Families wanting several languages in one subscription, since Japanese lists Japanese only
FrenchPod101
Who it suits
- French learners who want audio lessons for commutes and travel, with offline downloads included
- Anyone who wants live one-to-one and group classes bundled with self-study material rather than a separate contract
- Readers who want a 7 days trial and a 60 days refund window before committing to a longer term
Who should look elsewhere
- Learners of anything outside French, who should compare Reading Eggs or Bunpro rather than a French-only plan
- Buyers who want help beyond email and help centre, since a brand with chat or phone support fits better

Questions about each
Bunpro
Is there a free plan at Bunpro?+
Yes, a free tier is listed, so reviews can start at no cost. The paid side is a monthly plan at $5 or a lifetime price of $150, and price from is listed as $0 for the free entry. Nothing needs to be paid to look around first.
How long is the Bunpro free trial?+
The trial runs 30 days, which is longer than the 10-day median trial length in this group. That is a full month of paid features to test the app before a renewal date arrives, and it is a reason the monthly plan is safe to try rather than a leap.
FrenchPod101
What does FrenchPod101 cost to join?+
Entry plans start at $4, while the monthly option is priced at $10. On our ranking the monthly figure places FrenchPod101 7 of 25, and the entry price places it 9 of 35. So joining is cheaper than at most of the field without being the cheapest route in.
Is the monthly price what I pay at renewal?+
The published figures cover two different commitments: entry plans at $4 and the monthly plan at $10. The lower number buys a way in, while the monthly figure is what an ongoing subscriber keeps paying. Comparing the two tells you how much of the entry offer is a discount against the ongoing rate rather than the price of the plan itself.
